Settlement workers in schools

Students and parents, supported together

Record each intake and school meeting once. Students and their parents each have a file, linked as one family.

A week in SWIS

What school settlement workers do in Cairn, between visits to their schools.

  1. 1

    Meet a new family

Open SWIS cases for the student and a parent, linked as one family. Then record the intake.

  2. 2

    Stay in touch at home

Text parents a reminder before a school meeting, in the language they read best.

  3. 3

    Report the month

Each intake and school or settlement session becomes a row on the right SWIS template.

Students and parents

Choices that fit each person

Mark each person as a student or a parent or guardian. Cairn then offers only the choices that fit them.

  • Peer support and after-school activities for students
  • “Same for everyone” skips choices that don’t fit
  • The school kept on the student’s education details
A session’s iCARE answers for one client: language, delivery format, support services and the module’s questions.

One family

The whole family’s story in one place

Every session, note and message for a student sits on their timeline, beside their parents’ files.

  • Family members linked on each client page
  • Follow-ups for each school visit
  • Restricted records only the right people open
A client’s activity timeline, with cases, notes and messages in date order.

Ready for iCARE

SWIS reports on three IRCC templates: the intake, school-oriented services and settlement-oriented services.

Cairn asks who a service was designed for on school and settlement sessions, and not on intakes.

  • Client type: student, or parent or guardian
  • Needs, assistance and referrals to school resources
  • Activities delivered to each client
  • Formats, language used, supports and hours

Questions about SWIS

Can’t find what you need? Write to us and a person will answer.

[email protected]
Do parents need their own record?

Yes, when you report them. A parent or guardian who takes part has their own client record and SWIS case.

Does Cairn ask for the school and grade on each session?

No. iCARE doesn’t collect them. The school stays on the student’s education details.

Can one meeting be an intake and a school service?

Record it as two sessions and split the time. iCARE takes each type in its own file.
